Circondate dalla giungla guatemalteca che si affaccia sul fiume Usumacinta si trovano le rovine dell’antica città Maya di Yokib, oggi conosciuta come Piedras Negras (“Rocce nere” in spagnolo). A Piedras Negras, tra il quinto e il nono secolo, fiorì una delle più importanti corti dinastiche del periodo classico (ca. 250-900 DC).
Almeno undici noti autoproclamati “sacri signori” di Piedras Negras eressero decine di monumenti con iscrizioni dettagliate di ciò che hanno realizzato durante il loro regno.
