Nell’estremità occidentale della pianura tessalica, dove la catena del Pindo comincia a formarsi, là dove Erodoto affermava che in tempi remoti vi fosse il mare (“Histories Appodexis”, VII, 129), c’è un luogo talmente singolare e magnifico da passare a giusto titolo per una delle meraviglie dell’Oriente.
All’improvviso, dalla distesa dei campi coltivati, si staglia una foresta di pietra di oltre mille rocce gigantesche puntate verso il cielo. Pilastri enormi, prodigiosi “menhir”, alcuni alti oltre 400 metri, dalle pareti lisce a picco sul vuoto.
