Con tali parole Cristoforo Colombo descrive, ai Reali di Spagna, gli indios che lo avevano accolto nel Nuovo Mondo, e che portavano l’antico nome dei Taino. Nei secoli successivi, la retorica della scoperta o del popolo “puro e selvaggio”, vittima innocente del genocidio, ha fatto sì che gli abitanti delle Antille siano stati spesso costretti a recitare la parte dei comprimari accanto ai protagonisti europei, eroi o carnefici che fossero.
