Quando il monaco buddista Hsuan-tsang lasciò la Cina, l’ottavo mese del terzo anno del periodo Ching-Kwang (629 d.C.), per visitare le ‘contrade occidentali’ ed in particolare l’India, era già stato preceduto, lungo la famosa Via della Seta, da altri viaggiatori suoi connazionali che ci hanno lasciato relazioni di viaggio edite in Cina a partire dal IV secolo d.C.
