Tra il V e il VII secolo, le terre dell’alto Adriatico furono teatro di ricorrenti scorrerie da pare ti bande provenienti dal nord Europa, costituite soprattutto da Visigoti, Unni, Goti e Ostrogoti. Secondo una consolidata tradizione, le popolazioni venete, terrorizzate, decisero di abbandonare le città poste sulla gronda adriatica per riapparire sugli isolotti della Laguna che da sempre frequentavano per pescare, cacciare e approvvigionarsi di sale, ritenendoli al sicuro dai “barbari”, sprovvisti com’erano di mezzi per inseguirli sul mare.
