Dai documenti della Serenissima si rileva che la Laguna di Venezia era apparsa lastricata di ghiaccio almeno sei volte in quattro secoli: nel gennaio 1431, alla fine di febbraio 1490, nel dicembre del 1514, nel gennaio 1709, nel febbraio del 1755, dal 27 dicembre 1788 all’11 gennaio 1789, e quest’ultima ghiacciata, nonostante i gravi disagi e la lunga durata, divenne subito motivo di grande allegrezza.
